Boston Globe Sports Media Columnist Chad Finn and SPJ National President Chris Vaccaro joined SPJ New England and The Mass Media at UMass Boston on Thursday for their inaugural speaker series.
Finn joined the Globe as a sports copy editor and page designer in 2003, after a stint at the Concord Monitor, and then took over the sports media beat in 2009. He has won multiple awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors, including for a multimedia project in 2018 on LeBron James’s time in the NBA summer league in Boston.
He has also worked on projects including an oral history of Larry Bird’s 60-point game and a profile of former Red Sox pitcher and broadcaster Dennis Eckersley for the Globe Magazine. His stories have been selected for the notables section of “The Year’s Best Sports Writing” anthologies in 2022 and 2023.
The event is the first in a four-part series featuring Boston Globe sportswriter Chad Finn, former CNN anchor Jim Acosta, Globe Social Video Journalist Emily Sweeney and photographer Lou Jones. Through the speaker series, SPJ New England and The Mass Media aim to expand UMass Boston students’ access to journalism education opportunities, furthering SPJ’s mission to “inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists.”
The next event in the series, with Jim Acosta and former SPJ National President Rebecca Aguilar, will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 22. Registration details are forthcoming.
