A Conversation With Bob Ryan – SPJ-NE x The Mass Media

Join SPJ New England and The Mass Media for the first installment of their four-part speaker series at UMass Boston, featuring retired Boston Globe sportswriter Bob Ryan and moderated by SPJ National President Chris Vaccaro. Ryan retired from the Globe as a sports columnist in 2012, having covered 20 NBA finals, 20 Final Fours, nine World Series, five Super Bowls and seven Olympic Games. Over the course of his 44-year career, Ryan was a four-time winner of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s National Sportswriter of the Year Award. In 2015, he received a PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sports Writing. He is the author of “Scribe: My Life in Sports.”

The event is the first in a four-part series featuring retired Boston Globe sportswriter Bob Ryan, former CNN anchor Jim Acosta, Boston Globe Social Video Journalist Emily Sweeney and photographer Lou Jones. Through the speaker series, SPJ New England and The Mass Media aim to expand UMass Boston students’ access to journalism education opportunities, furthering SPJ’s mission to “inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists.”
