SUMMARY:A Conversation With Chad Finn - SPJ-NE x The Mass Media
DESCRIPTION:Join SPJ New England and The Mass Media for the first installment of their four-part speaker series at UMass Boston\, featuring Boston Globe Sportswriter Chad Finn and moderated by SPJ National President Chris Vaccaro. Finn joined the Globe as a sports copy editor and page designer in 2003\, after a stint at the Concord Monitor\, and then took over the sports media beat in 2009. He has won multiple awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors\, including for a multimedia project in 2018 on LeBron James’s time in the NBA summer league in Boston. He has also worked on projects including an oral history of Larry Bird’s 60-point game and a profile of former Red Sox pitcher and broadcaster Dennis Eckersley for the Globe Magazine. His stories have been selected for the notables section of “The Year’s Best Sports Writing” anthologies in 2022 and 2023. \nThe event is open to UMass Boston students and members of the public. Click here to reserve a seat. \nThe event is the first in a four-part series featuring Boston Globe sportswriter Chad Finn\, former CNN anchor Jim Acosta\, Boston Globe Social Video Journalist Emily Sweeney and photographer Lou Jones. Through the speaker series\, SPJ New England and The Mass Media aim to expand UMass Boston students’ access to journalism education opportunities\, furthering SPJ’s mission to “inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists.” \nUpdate: This event was originally planned to feature retired Boston Globe sportswriter Bob Ryan. Due to an unexpected scheduling conflict\, he is unable to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Join SPJ-NE for this Public Records 101 Training by former SPJ President Dave Cuillier. \nThis training is part of SPJ-NE’s monthly national FOIA contest for students. The chapter received a generous grant from the SPJ Foundation to hold the contest and partnered with MuckRock and the New England First Amendment Coalition to run the contest. \nDave is currently the Director of The Freedom of Information Project at the Brechner Center for the Advancement of the First Amendment at the University of Florida. \nHe started his career as a newspaper reporter and editor in the Pacific Northwest\, covering local\, state and federal government\, before earning his doctorate in communication in 2006 at Washington State University. During the past 17 years at the University of Arizona\, he has taught data journalism\, media law\, media ethics\, access to public records\, and other courses\, and served as school director from 2011-18. \nIn 2013-14\, Cuillier served as national president of the Society of Professional Journalists\, the largest and most broad-based organization of journalists in the nation\, and in 2016 was awarded the Wells Memorial Key Award\, the highest honor bestowed by SPJ for service to the profession.
